Your day on the water
Details & Itinerary
Mal runs one offshore charter per day because reaching the productive Bass Strait grounds takes time. Your exact ramp and fishing plan are confirmed according to the weather, sea conditions and target species.
- 01Meet Mal at the confirmed boat ramp in Rye or Hastings
- 02Depart at 6am and head through the heads into Bass Strait
- 03Search for schools of fish using sonar, birds and local knowledge
- 04Troll, jig or bait fish depending on the target and conditions
- 05Change grounds when required, then return after up to eight hours

- Victorian recreational fishing licence
- Sunglasses, hat and sunscreen
- Plenty of water, a packed lunch and snacks
- Weatherproof jacket and older clothes
- Sea-sickness medication if you are prone
- An esky in your car for your bagged catch
The Experience
It starts with an early morning departure, the hum of the diesel, and running out through the heads as the sun breaches the horizon.
Once you hit Bass Strait, the swell changes. The water turns a deep, dark blue. The sounder starts painting a picture of the reef systems below. This is where adrenaline takes over.
When the reel screams, it's all hands on deck. Offshore fishing is team work, patience, and raw power. Mal will guide you through the fight, but you've got to bring the muscle.
