Where Can I Catch Fish In The Bay?

Having a Charter Boat that can be towed on a trailer is key to being successful in fishing Port Phillip Bay. The fish move around in the bay, and it takes a lot of time to get there if you can only leave from a fixed location. Depending on the stage in the season and the species I am looking for, I will change location so that my customers can get the best results. For example, fishing by water depth according to the species will make a difference in results. At certain times of the year, areas of the bay seem to be deserted and you won’t find a single fish, which can be so frustrating. It takes many years of experience and persistence to see the best results. Like many experts in their industry, it’s time on the water that counts. Peak season in Port Phillip Bay is from September to December when Snapper are biting. However, a little-known fact is that fishing through winter is fantastic. While many people put the boat away, or head to other locations, I continue to fish because experience has taught me that there is good fishing throughout the whole year.

Fishing Charter Port Phillip Bay – All the best locations

Places I launch from are; Carrum Launching Way, Rye Boat Ramp, Mornington Boat Ramp, Martha Cove, and Sorrento. I like to depart from Carrum Launching Way from October to start of January and the main species of fish I am chasing this time of the year is Snapper. I fish from off St Kilda, Black Rock, Beaumaris, Mordialloc, Aspendale, Chelsea, Edithvale, Carrum, Seaford Frankston, Mt Eliza, Mornington to Mt Martha. A little tip here on snapper fishing, I have listed where I start fishing at the start of the season to where I finish up in March. I then fish for Pinkies off Black Rock throughout winter.

Mornington Boat ramp, from January to May, is a great place to chase Snapper, Pinkies and Squid.

Then at Martha Cove from March through to September, you can chase Gummy Sharks, Snapper Pinkies, Whiting and Squid.

Also, at Sorrento from January to September, you can often find Whiting, Squid, Gummy Sharks, and Kingfish. I also use Sorrento Boat Ramp to depart for off shore charters in Bass Straight.

How Many People Are Allowed On The Charter Boat in Port Phillip Bay?

I can comfortably take up to 9 passengers with the captain and a deck hand. Despite other boats I have owned being registered for up to 9 passengers, the customer experience is very different in a smaller boat with not much room. Not having the space to throw a line off and bumping into other anglers can ruin the experience. This is why I have made sure that there is plenty of room for everyone to enjoy the time out on the water. You can also click to see photos of the boat.

Is There Parking Available At The Boat Ramp?

Each boat ramp has plenty of parking for customers to leave their car during the duration of the fishing charter. Be sure not to park in the designated spots for vehciles with a trailer as you may receive a parking fine.

Do I Need To Get To The Boat Ramp Early?

If you’re planning on a fishing charter Port Phillip Bay, then I suggest arriving at the boat ramp at least ten minutes before the scheduled departure time. This will allow us to do a quick check that you are prepared and allow us to leave on time.

Where Our Fishing Charters Depart From

The home base for I’m Hooked Fishing Charters is Launching Way, Carrum. Many of our charters depart from here, heading out into Port Phillip Bay and then towards where the fish are known to be biting. Port Phillip Bay is my favourite bay to fish, with its huge span of 2,000 square kilometres. If the fish are biting closer towards Mornington and the surrounding Mornington Peninsula, then I may decide to depart from Mornington Boat Ramp. This gives us quick access to this area of the bay rather than travelling by water across from Carrum. You can fish from the entrance of Port Phillip Bay, which leads out into Bass Straight, right through to the main entrance of the Yarra River, near Williamstown. The key to fishing in the bay is knowing where you are most likely to get a good catch. This comes from experience and spending hours on the bay. I bring this experience to you, when you book a charter with I’m Hooked Fishing Charters

What Types of Fish Will We Catch?

Port Phillip Bay consists of a sandy bottom with reefs, scallop beds and some man-made artificial reefs. The depth of water I can fish from is 5 to 24 metres. At the entrance to the bay there are places that are very deep, around 40 metres, and it’s here we chase King Fish. Port Phillip Bay is a lot easier to fish than Western Port Bay with the slower tides and we can use lighter sinkers and fishing gear. The other species we commonly catch in the bay are Snapper, Pinkies, Flathead, Whiting, Salmon, Squid and Gummy Sharks. Of course, there are many other species that I have not listed.

What Is The Weather Like On The Bay?

It can get choppy very quickly as the wind sweeps across the bay. I let everyone know the conditions and what to wear before they come on a fishing charter, so they are prepared. It is important to know what to bring and for those that suffer from seasickness, I recommend they take motion sickness tablets beforehand, as being sick is not enjoyable on a Fishing Charter Port Phillip Bay.
